EDITOR’ S NOTE

Hello and welcome to the latest edition of Intelligent CIO Africa. This month’ s cover story, which can be found on page 14, features Phila Msizazwe, CIO of the Automobile Association of South Africa, and tells us how two decades of IT experience and a passion for innovation have shaped his approach to technology leadership.

He explains how his journey from technical support to the executive table gave him a strategic perspective on IT as a driver of business transformation. At the AA, technology underpins a major Digital Transformation, with investments in automation, data analytics and modern digital platforms aimed at improving member experience and operational efficiency. through Axis’ intelligent surveillance technologies, implemented with the support of integration specialist Cygnetic.
The precinct now uses scalable, analytics-driven solutions, including people and vehicle counting, licence plate recognition, and on-device analytics, to monitor visitors and manage traffic effectively. Axis’ durable hardware, some still in use since 2013, ensures long-term reliability while supporting insights that benefit tenants and enhance the visitor experience.
With ongoing expansion planned, the V & A continues to leverage technology to address security challenges and optimise its operations across the entire precinct.
Msizazwe also reflects on the evolving role of the CIO, emphasising the need to act as a strategic business partner, navigate complex IT ecosystems and foster innovation within the team. He encourages aspiring IT leaders to focus on business impact, communicate clearly across the organisation, and stay curious in a fast-changing technological landscape.
Ultimately, his vision illustrates how a future-fit technology strategy can strengthen both the organisation’ s growth and its role in the national mobility ecosystem.
