Digital Realty and IXPN expand peering network with new Internet Exchange point of presence in Nigeria

Digital Realty has announced the activation of a new Internet exchange point of presence( PoP) for the Internet Exchange Point of Nigeria( IXPN) at its newly commissioned data centre in Ibeju- Lekki, Lagos.

This development marks a significant milestone in strengthening Nigeria’ s digital infrastructure and elevating West Africa’ s connectivity. for the 2Africa subsea cable system, one of the world’ s most expansive subsea cable projects, linking over 46 locations throughout Africa, Europe, the Middle East and Asia. This can deliver reliable, highspeed connectivity and can help enhance Nigeria’ s role in the global digital economy.
With the opening of Digital Realty’ s Lekki data centre alongside its campus in Victoria Island, Digital Realty became the first carrier-neutral data centre provider in Lagos to operate two campuses, offering enhanced resilience and Disaster Recovery options for the industry.
Building on IXPN’ s existing PoP at Digital Realty’ s campus located in Victoria Island, the newly activated PoP at the company’ s Lekki data centre extends IXPN’ s reach, offering access from 12 data centres across Nigeria. IXPN is now uniquely available in all major data centres in Lagos, further positioning Lagos as a hub for local and regional interconnectivity.

Airtel Africa announces successful data and messaging testing of Starlink Mobile in Kenya

Airtel Africa and SpaceX has announced the successful testing of data and messaging services with Starlink Mobile in Kenya, in a significant step towards bringing satellite-to-mobile connectivity to millions of people across Airtel Africa’ s 14 markets.

The testing was done in‘ no connectivity’ areas – locations where terrestrial mobile networks did not have a signal. In these areas, Starlink Mobile was seamlessly activated, allowing 4G-compatible smartphones access to Starlink’ s constellation of 650 launched satellites to keep them connected.
Sunil Taldar, Chief Executive Officer, Airtel Africa, said:“ We are thrilled to move from announcement to actionable steps with our partners at SpaceX. This testing phase in Kenya is a testament to our commitment to expanding global access. By integrating Starlink Mobile’ s technology, we are ensuring that our customers remain connected even when they travel beyond our terrestrial network.”
Following this testing in Kenya, Airtel Africa and Starlink Mobile plan to leverage the insights gained to expand the service across Airtel Africa’ s 14 markets, in line with country-specific regulatory approvals.
