AI-powered digitisation project positions Madagascar as a model for African digital identity modernisation
Madagascar is emerging as a model for digital identity modernisation in Africa following the digitisation of nearly 10 million civil registration records through a project led by Studia Inc.
The initiative, delivered as part of the national EC-MADA programme, highlights how Artificial Intelligence-powered digitisation, mobile connectivity and large-scale data processing are becoming critical foundations for Digital Transformation strategies across the continent.
Studia Inc conducted the inventory, digitisation and indexing of civil registration records across 1,695 communes in 11 priority regions. The project mobilised 500 people over seven months and used autonomous mobile units equipped with satellite connectivity and solar energy to reach remote locations.
The company said its specialised OCR technology and AIdriven indexing systems enabled the automated extraction of handwritten data from complex paper archives while maintaining strict reliability standards required for national identity systems.
Jean-Claude Fioravanti, CEO, Studia Inc, said:“ Our expertise is built on mastering large-scale digitisation of civil registration records, with exacting standards for data quality and reliability. This partnership with D. IA Advisory strengthens our capacity to deploy our solutions across diverse local environments.”
Studia Inc partnered with Senegal-based D. IA Advisory to support interoperability, local deployment and integration into national systems while addressing regulatory and data sovereignty requirements.
African Mining Week to highlight AI and advanced technology driving Africa’ s US $ 8.5 trillion mining transformation
As African nations increasingly adopt advanced technologies and AI to optimise operations across the mining value chain, the upcoming African Mining Week( AMW) will bring together technology providers, investors, project developers and regulators to explore the Digital Transformation of the sector.
The event will feature a dedicated panel titled Leveraging Advanced Technologies and AI to Transform Mining Practices for Sustainable Growth, highlighting the use, challenges and investment opportunities of AI within Africa’ s growing mining industry.
The DRC is also collaborating with U. S.-based startup KoBold Metals to apply AI-driven techniques at the Mingomba Lithium Mine, enhancing lithium development.
AMW will unpack best AI practices to help Africa capitalise on its 30 % share of global critical minerals, with demand projected to triple by 2030.
The event is scheduled for October 14 – 16 in Cape Town.
In the Democratic Republic of Congo( DRC), AI is rapidly reshaping exploration. Speaking at AMW 2025, Louis Watum Kabamba, DRC’ s Minister of Mines, said AI-enabled exploration has the potential to reduce resource discovery timelines to under three years.
He emphasised the DRC’ s efforts to leverage AI to unlock 90 % of its geology and over US $ 24 trillion in untapped minerals.
In February 2026, the country partnered with Xcalibur Smart Mapping to employ advanced geospatial solutions for mapping critical minerals and mitigating exploration risks.
