Kenya Defence Forces turns waste into renewable energy

The Kenya Defence Forces( KDF) is deploying waste-to-energy technologies as part of efforts to improve sustainability, energy efficiency and resource management across its installations.

Through its Research, Science, Technology and Innovation programme, KDF is developing solutions that transform waste into renewable energy and reusable resources.
At Water Camp Cantonment, Defence National Security Industries is implementing the Defence Headquarters Camp Administration Unit Integrated Solid Waste Management System. The initiative combines biogas production, recycling and resource recovery to improve how waste is collected and processed.
Food waste generated from messes is directed to a modern biogas plant, where it is converted into renewable energy. The resulting biogas is compressed and stored for use at the DHQ CAU Warrant Officers and Sergeants Mess.
The system also incorporates equipment for compacting paper and plastic waste, improving segregation and recycling while reducing the volume of material requiring final disposal.
Technical collaboration with the Numerical Machining Complex has helped improve the reliability of the system through the restoration of biogas supplies, pipeline rerouting and improvements to slurry preparation. Backup shredders have also been introduced to support the continuous processing of biodegradable waste.
KDF plans to further enhance the system through smart waste bins, Internet of Things-enabled monitoring of the biogas digester and automated baling systems.
KDF said the initiative demonstrates how locally developed innovation can address operational and environmental challenges while reducing dependence on conventional energy and wastedisposal systems. The model could also support similar wastemanagement initiatives across other KDF establishments.

RS South Africa backs next-generation edge AI with NVIDIA platform

RS South Africa is supporting the NVIDIA Jetson Orin Nano

2, a new entry-level edge AI platform designed to bring greater computing performance to robotics, vision AI and intelligent machines.
Expected to become available in the first half of 2027, the Jetson Orin Nano 2 delivers twice the inference performance of the Jetson Orin Nano Super while retaining the same compact form factor and 40 W power envelope. It also consumes 40 % less power at equivalent performance.
The platform features improved Tensor Cores and higher memory bandwidth, delivering 78 TOPS of AI compute alongside 8 GB of memory and an eight-core Arm CPU.
These capabilities are designed to support applications including delivery and inspection drones, robotics and vision AI systems, particularly where real-time processing and decision-making are required at the edge. The platform is supported by NVIDIA’ s open AI software stack, Jetson agent skills and wider AI ecosystem.
RS said the platform could provide South African developers and engineering teams with new opportunities to develop intelligent machines and vision-based applications while balancing performance, energy consumption and physical footprint.
RS plans to provide further information on early ordering opportunities ahead of the platform’ s availability in 2027.
