CASE STUDY not cost centres , but revenue generators . While we respect the past , we owe our predecessors a debt of gratitude that will not be repaid by reliving the past but by charting a new path for CIOs .
Do you think it ’ s a good idea for CIOs to seek to become CEOs ?
Yes . I think that ’ s the next generation . I think once we have what I call a seat at the table and we are being viewed as business leaders , we have everything it takes . We have access to the data . We are now much closer to product development . IT manages and provides all the critical data required for reporting and decision making . Let ’ s review how we use information at our disposal to give our businesses insights and direction . Being relevant in the future is about wearing both a business and technology hat , but more so knowing which one to wear .
Do you have such a thing as a typical day ?
My day starts very early . Because of COVID-19 my team and I were thinking about how we interact when we ’ re not in the office so we set up a daily stand-up . All the senior people in my team have a minute or two to give updates . It ’ s an agile practise that we have adopted . In fewer than 45 minutes , we cover what we did yesterday , what we ’ re focusing on and what help we need . That starts off my day , then I move into executive level meetings . I spend most of my day in meetings but I also make it a point to have some ‘ one-on-one ’ s ’ with the team as well as skip levels . Every day is packed , it ’ s almost a seven to seven . •
