Market size and consumption
The ICT sector has posted growth over the past decade , increasing its contribution to GDP from US $ 900m or 2.3 % of the total in 2014 , to US $ 1.7bn and 3.6 %, respectively , in 2017 . By 2020 its share had risen to 3.9 %, according to the Ghana Statistical Service , GSS . growing subsector of the economy in early 2021 , with YoY growth of 22.1 % and 20 %, respectively , in the first and second quarters .
There were 3,100 + information and communications establishments in operation and 29,500 + people employed in the sector as of 2018 , according to Integrated Business Establishment Survey conducted by the GSS . By 2020 the sector workforce had risen to around 39,000 +, as per comparable data from GSMA Intelligence .
Mobile service penetration , measured by unique subscribers , is relatively high , at 19 million , or 67 % of the population , as of 2020 , above the sub-Saharan African average of 44 %, according to the most recent country report from GSMA Intelligence .
