FEATURE : IT SKILLS
While the potential is vast , the challenges cannot be underestimated . These range from infrastructural and connectivity gaps to an overwhelmed education system that struggles to keep pace with rapid technological advancement . To address these , a multi-stakeholder approach is necessary , involving governments , academia , the private sector , and global technology players .
Other than technology skills , there are other skills development to consider as well .
Leadership skills
Successful career planning is not just about weighing up qualifications and hard skills , it is also about soft skills , the practical realities within a working environment , and how people can be supported in managing their career wellbeing alongside their mental wellbeing . Personal brand is a crucial , less discussed aspect of personal and professional development .
“ This is how professionals want to be perceived by the team . What strengths make you the go-to-guy in your team and how can you leverage this to give you exposure to new opportunities in your career ? The aim is always to consider how we can help our teams be future-proof and ready for the next interesting project ,” says Anene Britz , Talent Manager , Dariel Software
Career development and reskilling are integral to succession planning , aiding not only individuals on their journey toward promotions but also allowing businesses to mitigate risk . While skills development is a potent tool for retention , it should not be viewed as a universal remedy .
On one hand , upskilling and personal development ensures that businesses remain profitable , facilitate succession planning , and minimise the risk of preventable , regrettable losses , while building staff credibility .
On the other hand , for employees , these strategies ensure the attainment of personal goals , help carve out a niche as a thought leader in their chosen industry and bolster their marketability . These principles hold true not just for technology companies but are applicable to all businesses across various sectors .
Is hybrid work another factor ?
“ The problem is more complex than some would believe ,” says Nicol Myburgh , Head CRS Technologies HCM Business Unit .
South Africa is wrestling with a sizeable IT skills dilemma . Not only is there a shortage in the number of available IT skills , but of the job seekers available , some cannot apply their knowledge in practice and others who can , soon move on to better prospects . Candidates often hold relevant qualification but are unable to perform when put to the test .
Business leaders point to digital transformation as contributing to the shortage . They argue that businesses are under pressure to adapt operating models to accommodate remote working , connectivity , and access , and become agile competitors in their industries .
Myburgh believes the root cause of this dearth of IT skills is linked to the hybrid business operating model . Employees are now capable of working remotely , having fine-tuned their adaptability and capability during the pandemic .
At the same time , there is a high demand for IT and telecommunications skills globally . Job seekers have the choice to trade life in South Africa for other countries that have functioning infrastructure , lower taxes , and higher salaries .

“ Ensuring that people are happy and supported is a wonderful way to boost retention , a top priority for any business in the technology environment . But there is also a clear financial benefit for businesses . When organisations invest in their people , they are ensuring those people stay at the top of their game and deliver the best quality work that they possibly can ,” adds Britz .
