Greetings to the readers of Intelligent CIO Africa . The threat of cybersecurity extends well into Africa and into any industry . No industry and no enterprise can deem themselves to be safe . In our lead feature this month we present how Dimension Data and Western Cape Blood Service remediated a life-threatening cyberattack .

Western Cape Blood Service holds a unique position as the sole provider of blood products in the region . The attack had a significant impact on the systems responsible for tracking blood from the veins of volunteer donors to the veins of patients . This disruption not only affected personal and health records but also prevented the service ’ s laboratories from conducting automated batch blood testing .
Dimension Data put together a team and started with terminating Internet access and isolating machines . In addition , CrowdStrike licenses were used in the remediation . CrowdStrike , on request from Dimension Data donated licenses to WCBS for a period to assist with the containment and recovery . This was followed by a forensic investigation to identify the full extent of the attack . of data that was under-utilised , both externally , in a customer-facing context and internally and brought in the Qlik solution suite .
Qlik integrates with ERP , process automation and digitisation platform , workshop system , telematics including GPS tracking for vehicles , trip management , and human resources management systems to produce advanced analytics . Qlik solutions , including QlikView , Qlik NPrinting and Qlik Sense , access , process and visualise data across operations in Africa .
