Obsidian and GitLab showcase capabilities of Open Source at AWS Summit

Obsidian Systems , an established supplier of open-source solutions , showcased the strengths of its partnership with GitLab at the AWS Summit in Johannesburg at the end of last month . This collaboration offers clients the power of GitLab ’ s comprehensive DevOps platform , which is fully integrated with AWS services , and Obsidian ’ s local expertise to enable companies to accelerate their cloud-native applications .

During the AWS Summit , Obsidian Systems highlighted the power of AWS services in enabling cloud-native , elastic , and resilient architectures .
“ The work Obsidian and GitLab are doing together brings advanced capabilities in microservices , API strategies , and DevOps pipelines . Through this , companies are empowered with real-time cloud cost optimisation and robust security measures ,” says Muggie van Staden , CEO at Obsidian Systems .
Key benefits of GitLab on AWS include integration with AWS Elastic Kubernetes Service . This enables developers to manage their infrastructure while enhancing productivity through automated deployment pipelines . Obsidian customers can also migrate from AWS CodeCommit to GitLab , simplifying their development processes and reducing operational overhead .
Using AWS , organisations across industry sectors can leverage serverless and microservices architectures to build modern applications . Key services such as AWS IoT , Snowflake , and Redshift can be used to create scalable data lakes . Automation tools like CloudFormation and Kubernetes can then be used on top of the environment to streamline DevOps processes .
Obsidian ’ s FinOps strategies demonstrated at the AWS Summit focused on optimising cloud spend through actionable insights and automation . By integrating tools that track , analyse , and automate cloud cost management , such as scheduling services to start and stop instances and providing detailed reporting , businesses can significantly reduce waste and improve operational efficiency .
These strategies align with well-architected principles , ensuring businesses gain full visibility and control over their cloud expenditures while staying agile .

East African Humanitarian Summit showcases availability of Starlink from IEC Telecom

East African Humanitarian Summit held yet another successful conference , bringing together more than 80 UN Agencies , NGOs and over 600 delegates in Nairobi . This think-tank event was attended by experts from the humanitarian and private sectors to outline the roadmap for the sustainable development of Africa .

Closing the digital divide is one of the prime conditions for lasting success . IEC Telecom , an international provider in satellite communications , joined the event to reveal an innovative network management solution powered by the Starlink LEO network .
“ Bridging the digital gap is not just a technological imperative . It is a pathway to sustainable development and inclusive progress in Africa ,” said Cameron Malik , Events Director , East African Humanitarian Summit , EAHS .
Low-Earth-Orbit , LEO telecom networks , such as Starlink , opened new horizons for the aid sector , enabling fast-speed and low-latency connectivity , a prerequisite for seamless operation of modern operations , even in the most remote areas . Licensed in 13 countries , the disruptive operator aims to expand its service across 30 more African states by the end of 2025 .
While LEO fuels digital transformation , network
management shapes the architecture of the new connectivity ecosystem . Addressing EAHS delegates , Nabil Ben Soussia , CCO of IEC Telecom Group , presented an innovative solution for the implementation of Starlink within the humanitarian field .
“ Network management is not only about user quality but also flexibility and budget control . Considering escalating geopolitical tensions and the rising number of natural disasters , the humanitarian sector is facing a lot of pressure to optimise aid delivery ,” explained Ben Soussia . “ Our new solutions allow NGOs to shift Starlink data allocation between their missions as and when required , achieving maximum productivity over each megabit .”
In case of emergency , vital connectivity can be swiftly repurposed from routine operations to critical needs , such as telemedicine in field hospitals .
