Greetings to the readers of Intelligent CIO Africa . The era of centralised computing followed by client server computing placed great emphasis on the integrity and availability of hardware systems . Applications and databases were hosted on large and medium servers and used to function independently of other applications and databases . The merit of the overall system was measured in terms of availability or uptime and there was little emphasis on data sharing between multiple applications and databases .
The arrival of ERP applications and other business critical applications like inventory and supply chain began to put pressure on software vendors to get their applications to talk to each other . Middleware and APIs were innovations in this direction . However for governments at large , who have built citizen service applications as stand alone , monolithic systems , the fast pace of digital transformation has caught them off guard .
African citizens are seeing the benefits of cloud and digital transformation in multiple areas including fintech , banking , telecom , ecommerce , travel , hospitality , retail , education and are expecting similar levels of innovation and digital customer experience from their governments as well . platform has been built on a WSO2 platform and integrates 147 entities and has enabled more than 150 million transactions .
Before implementation of the data integration platform , different government entities were at different levels of automation . Technical challenges related to the integration of systems have now been addressed through the Uganda data integration platform . An integration process that used to take months to complete to achieve the desired integration , now takes a few hours .
