Editor’ s Note

Hello and welcome to the latest edition of Intelligent CIO Africa.

This month’ s cover story, which can be found on page 14, features Professor Elijah Omwenga, Vice-Chancellor of the Open University of Kenya( OUK).
He tells us how the university’ s partnership with MindHYVE. ai is embedding Agentic AI into its digital ecosystem to transform learning, teaching and workforce readiness.
The collaboration introduces adaptive, personalised learning through ArthurAI, enabling real-time academic support tailored to individual student needs. It also empowers faculty by reducing routine tasks and providing data-driven insights to enhance teaching and curriculum development.
Mark Bowen Editorial Director
By leveraging analytics and co-design, OUK aims to align academic programmes more closely with labour market demands and national development priorities. Strong governance, compliance with the Kenya Data Protection Act and ethical AI use remain central to the initiative. Ultimately, the partnership positions OUK and Kenya as leaders in AI-driven digital education across Africa.
Elsewhere, we learn how Man-in-the-Middle attacks are exposing the weaknesses in trusted encryption protocols, challenging the assumption that secure connections guarantee safety. Cybercriminals can intercept and manipulate encrypted communications by exploiting SSL / TLS flaws or compromised certificates, often without detection.
As Digital Transformation expands and reliance on cloud, mobile and public networks grows, organisations face a widening attack surface and heightened risk. Many businesses still rely on basic security measures, leaving them vulnerable to breaches that can damage trust, trigger compliance issues and cause financial loss.
To counter this, organisations must adopt advanced monitoring solutions, strengthen governance and leverage expert partnerships to detect threats within encrypted traffic. Ultimately, maintaining digital trust requires continuous vigilance and a more proactive, evolving approach to cybersecurity.
