BUILDING AFRICA’ S AI FUTURE

Why Africa’ s next digital leap will be defined not by using Artificial Intelligence, but by building it.

Intelligence story was framed as one of untapped potential. Analysts spoke of promise, governments published strategies, startups attracted attention and enterprises experimented cautiously with pilot projects. The conversation revolved around what AI could one day achieve for the continent.
Today, that narrative has fundamentally changed.
Few organisations have tracked Africa’ s AI transformation as closely as Boston Consulting Group. According to Hamid Maher, MD and Senior Partner at BCG, the continent has entered a new phase where AI is becoming an executive priority rather than a technology initiative.
“ In our BCG AI Radar 2026: As AI Investments Surge, CEOs Take the Lead report, we found that 59 % of African companies plan to spend more than US $ 50 million on AI in 2026. African organisations have already upskilled 55 % of their workforces in AI, the highest rate globally, while allocating nearly half of their AI budgets to retraining and capability building.”
Perhaps even more telling is where the momentum is coming from. Rather than leaving AI decisions to technology teams, African CEOs are taking direct ownership of transformation programmes. BCG found that 42 % of African chief executives qualify as AI“ Trailblazers”, significantly higher than the European Union average, while executives are spending considerable time building their own AI expertise.
That executive commitment is being mirrored across industry.
Paul Spagnoletti, Chief Revenue Officer at Synthesis, believes organisations have stopped asking whether AI can deliver value and are instead focusing on where it can produce measurable business outcomes.
“ Africa’ s AI journey has moved from curiosity and experimentation into practical deployment,” he said.“ Governments, startups and enterprises are now applying AI to real business and societal challenges, from fraud detection and customer engagement to healthcare, agriculture, financial inclusion and operational automation.”
