The same shift is evident across enterprise technology vendors.
Hyther Nizam, CEO of Zoho MEA, argues that businesses are now concentrating on tangible outcomes rather than technological novelty.
“ Businesses across the continent are focused on measurable outcomes such as improving customer experience, automating repetitive tasks, enhancing employee productivity and making better decisions through data.”
A continent built to leapfrog
One recurring theme emerges across every executive interviewed: Africa’ s greatest advantage is not that it resembles developed markets, but that it doesn’ t. Historically, necessity has forced African organisations to innovate differently.
Mobile money became a global success precisely because traditional banking infrastructure was limited. Wireless communications expanded faster than fixedline networks because building entirely new infrastructure proved more practical than extending legacy systems.
Industry leaders believe AI presents another opportunity to leapfrog conventional development paths.
Levent Ergin, Chief Strategist for Agentic AI, Regulatory Compliance and Sustainability at Informatica, compares today’ s AI revolution to the mobile revolution that transformed Africa two decades ago.“ History shows that innovation doesn’ t always emerge from abundance. More often, it emerges from necessity.”
Rather than attempting to replicate Silicon Valley, he believes African organisations will develop AI solutions tailored to local priorities, including healthcare, agriculture, education, financial inclusion and climate resilience.
Karl Fischer, CTO at Obsidian Systems, sees another competitive advantage: Africa’ s highly connected, mobile-first population creates unique opportunities for edge AI applications that simply do not exist elsewhere.
